Focus on Ware, but Packer OL can’t forget about Bowen

For most of this 2009 season, the Packers offensive line has turned no-name DE’s into Pro Bowlers.

Starting in week one against the Bears, RT Allen Barbre made DE Adenwale Ogunleye into a household name on national TV, even if none of us can remember how to spell or pronounce his name.  The big fella from Chicago had never had a sack going against RT Mark Tauscher, but the youngster Barbre was barely a speed bump for Ogunleye as he had 5 QB hits, 2 sacks, and 3 tackles for loss against Aaron Rodgers, in what was an ominous beginning for the Packers offense.

Next was Cincinnati and DE Antwan Odom. He’s another guy nobody in Green Bay knew the name of before the game. But after the game? They’d heard his name called on sacks 5 times, plus 7 more times on QB hits.  That was the game that Chad Clifton re-injured his ankle so Odom was able to feast mostly on Daryn Colledge.

Of course, since then Jared Allen has collected a season’s worth of sacks against the Packers LT’s in two games.

Now comes DeMarcus Ware. He’s an OLB in the 3-4 mold, like Clay Matthews. He’s also the 2008 NFL sack champion.

DE Stephen Bowen, #72, may be the next DE who gets showcased by the Packers pourous offensive line

Next to him on passing downs is DE Stephen Bowen, and next to Bowen is NT Jay Ratliff. These 3 guys alone are reason enough for Mike McCarthy to finally admit his OL is shaky, and his QB needs to get rid of the ball faster. McCarthy needs to roll Rodgers out some.

Regardless, not many in Green Bay had heard of those first couple of DE’s before, but for Packer Nation, they better not all be voting for Bowen after this week’s game. If the trend continues, they will be.
