As soon as Mike McCarthy brought Dom Capers to the NFL’s northern outpost 11 months ago to redirect the Packers defensive charge, the questions followed.

Would Capers be able to pull off the transformation to a new scheme with a bunch of veterans built and trained for the old scheme?

"I think he's definitely earned the trust from the players on the defense," said Jenkins. "He already had respect when he got here, but players bought in and said, 'let's put all our chips in,' " added Pickett.

"I think he's definitely earned the trust from the players on the defense," said Jenkins. "He already had respect when he got here, but players bought in and said, 'let's put all our chips in,' " added Pickett.

Could he do it quickly for the Packers to become a playoff contender again? Could he plug rookies in key positions?

There were a lot of questions, but one person might have reassured Packer Nation.

Bill Polian is a five-time NFL executive of the year, an award he won with three different franchises. With his eye for talent, he built teams that contended for the Super Bowl in Buffalo and Indianapolis.

When he decided to take on the general manager position for the Carolina Panthers in their 1995 expansion year, he envisioned only one guy to head the whole operation: Capers.

He pulled the defensive coordinator away from the Pittsburgh Steelers, where opponents stayed out of the end zone more than anywhere else, and turned over the keys to his new franchise to the workaholic Capers.

“I’m not sure that there’s anybody, including Dick LeBeau, who plays that defense, who puts it together in a game plan and calls it, as well as Dom does,” said Polian. “He had a terrific vision for what he thought the team could be, and what he wanted it to be and a terrific grasp for how he wanted to play defense.

“We built the team right along according to Dom’s blueprint and it worked out great.”
