~According to Clifton Smith’s twitter page, Clifton Smith is headed to Green Bay, and could finally bolster the Packers return game.

As of noon, it hadn’t appeared that Smith had signed a contract yet, but it was expected later today. This would alleviate forcing the Packers to use their starting CB, Tramon Williams, as punt returner and Jordy Nelson as kick returner.

Smith became an inspirational story in 2008 when he joined the Bucs as an undrafted free agent, missed final cuts then went to the practice squad. He eventually was promoted to the active roster, replacing disappointing rookie Dexter Jackson, then became just the third rookie free agent to make the Pro Bowl.

Smith was a 2008 Pro Bowl selection as a kick returner but was released Sunday as the Bucs continued to tweak their roster heading into the season opener against the Browns on Sunday.

Smith ranked seventh in the NFL last season in kick-return average (29.1 yards), but the Bucs have other good options, including some youngsters.

Smith, 25, missed the first two games of the preseason while battling knee pain related to gout.
Smith went on injured reserve last season after suffering the second of two concussions.

UPDATE: According to Smith’s own twitter page tonight, he has signed with the Miami Dolphins, staying in the South Florida sunshine as opposed to the frozen tundra that Green Bay has to offer.

No word yet on contract terms, or what Green Bay offered.  The Packers return game is still in limbo now less than five days from the opening game.
