~No one is exactly sure when it happened, but Packers rookie Morgan Burnett suffered a torn ACL in his left knee during the 28-26 victory over the Detroit Lions Sunday at Lambeau Field.

It may be unclear when the injury occured, but it is clear that Burnett played with it for at least a half dozen snaps, including the touchdown pass he allowed to receiver Calvin Johnson at the start of the second quarter. Burnett bit too hard on a corner fake and got spun around as Johnson took the route to the post for a 23-yard touchdown.

“He played 23 snaps,” coach Mike McCarthy said. “It probably happened between the ninth and 12th snaps. There’s no clear-cut picture of it (on the game video).”

McCarthy said the injury to Burnett was disappointing because he felt he was making progress.

McCarthy said that Burnett, a third-round pick, started to feel some of the common symptoms of a torn ACL, but played at least two full series with it until exiting after Detroit’s third series. His last play was the Jahvid Best fumble with 11:47 left in the second quarter.

Team physician Patrick McKenzie suspected a torn ACL when he examined Burnett and it was confirmed Monday through tests, McCarthy said. He will be put on injured reserve and be out for the season.

“Morgan is a very mature young man,” his agent, Kevin Conner said. “This is a minor set-back in his bright, promising career as a top safety in the NFL. He will be fine.”
