Injuries could run roughshod over Green Bay Packers roster for game against Miami Dolphins

~The ongoing barrage of injuries has created multiple problems for the Green Bay Packers.

In the short term, coach Mike McCarthy and his staff will have to find ways to make up for the absence of playmakers such as tight end Jermichael Finley, who was scheduled to undergo arthroscopic knee surgery today and will miss three to six weeks; linebacker Nick Barnett, who has surgery planned for Wednesday on his wrist and could miss six to eight weeks; and perhaps even quarterback Aaron Rodgers (concussion), outside linebacker Clay Matthews (hamstring) and defensive end Ryan Pickett (ankle) for a week or more.

Green Bay Packers teammates Ryan Pickett (79), Charlie Peprah (26), Nick Collins (36), Charles Woodson (21) and Greg Jennings (85) show support for their teammate Jermichael Finley, bottom, as he is attended to by team personnel after being injured against the Washington Redskins during the first quarter of the game at FedEx Field in Landover, Md., on Oct. 10, 2010.

In the long term, McCarthy and General Manager Ted Thompson will have to decide if they can afford to keep injured players on the roster who may not play for several weeks or months. Somehow, they’ll have to figure out how to field a 45-man active roster to play the Miami Dolphins on Sunday at Lambeau Field.

That could be difficult because there are as many as 11 players on the 53-man roster whose status is in some degree of doubt for this week.

“Any time you deal with injuries, particularly this time of year, when you get up into the six- to eight-week mark, those are tough decisions to make,” McCarthy said Monday. “But every injury is different. The fact that individuals are having surgery, we should have a pretty clear-cut view of exactly — based on the history of the individual — how the medical staff feels. I really can’t speculate if we’re going to hold onto one player as opposed to another.”
