Spencer for Hire: Where is Spencer Havner?

~Last year, Spencer Havner did something very rarely done in today’s National Football League. He changed positions from defense to offense, and made an NFL roster as the Packers third tight end.

He had been a linebacker at UCLA, and in the NFL with the Redskins and Packers, before they switched him to convert to tight end.

It worked magic as Havner became the Packers second best receiving tight end, behind Jermichael Finley. Havner actually caught as many touchdown passes on the season as wide receiver Greg Jennings did, and that included two big scores against the rival Vikings when Finley was out injured.

Spencer Havner scored as many touchdowns as Greg Jennings last year, and the Packers are down 1 1/2 tight ends right now, and the offense is struggling, as are the special teams. Spencer for Hire?

Well here we are again with Finley not able to suit up against those same Vikings, as his season is done injured. And where’s Havner?

Ted Thompson, a la with punter Jon Ryan two years ago, re-invented the wheel and he cut Havner right before the season started. The Lions claimed him right away and tried to make him back into a linebacker.

Havner tweaked a hamstring, and was recently released by those Lions. Those Lions, by the way, have a great receiving tight end in Tony Scheffler, whom they just signed to a new 3-year, $8.5 million deal last week, and he’s behind 2009 first round draft pick Brandon Pettigrew. So they didn’t need any help at tight end.

So Havner is available. Finley is done. Donald Lee drops passes and fumbles. And the Vikings are coming to Green Bay in five days, the same matchup and location where Havner scored two touchdowns last year. And the current Packers offense is struggling.

Has Ted Thompson lost Havner’s phone number, or has he lost his mind?

Here’s¬†an article from the Press Gazette about the tight end troubles in Green Bay right now.
