~Mark Tauscher’s season — and possibly his career with the Green Bay Packers — is over.

The Packers on Friday placed the veteran right tackle on injured reserve because of the shoulder injury he sustained in Week 4 against Detroit. He has not played in a game since and the way rookie Bryan Bulaga has played in his place, Tauscher wasn’t going to get his job back.

“Despite long odds, Mark has been battling this shoulder injury in an effort to get back on the field,” Packers General Manager Ted Thompson said in a statement. “His work ethic and motivation have been tremendous, but the injury has been too severe to overcome. He is a team leader and will be an important part of our team as we go through the stretch run of our season.”

To fill Tauscher’s spot on the roster, the Packers re-signed tight end , who was recently released by the Detroit Lions. Havner had been with the Packers from 2008 until he was somewhat surprisingly released at the end of training camp this summer. The Lions waived him injured on Oct. 14 after he sustained a hamstring injury. He was a key special teams player for the Packers and also can play inside linebacker.

The 33-year-old Tauscher, an 11th-year veteran, is the 11th player (sixth starter) the Packers have placed on injured reserve this season. In March, he signed a two-year contract with the Packers that included a $1.8 million signing bonus and a $1.4 million base salary for this season. However, that salary jumps to $4.1 million next season, and it’s unlikely the Packers will bring him back at that price.

A seventh-round draft pick in 2000, Tauscher has spent his entire career with the Packers. He started 132 games, including the first four this season. He came back last season from a second reconstructive knee surgery and helped solidify the offensive line the second half of 2009. However, he had not played as well this season before his shoulder injury.
